SL1 - 3/26/12

Welcome back folks. I hope you all had a wonderful spring break and are ready to head down the home stretch with renewed energy. I know I am! Our work with various topics in algebra and functions continues this week with a look at transformations. We'll spend only one week on it, but the ideas are fairly straightforward and you will continue to see them as we move ahead. I will also return your tests on exponents and logarithms. See me before this Friday if you want some extra help and a chance to redo that test. See you in class,
Mr. Alei

SL2 - 3/26/12

Welcome back folks. I hope you all had a wonderful spring break and are ready to head down the home stretch with renewed energy. I know I am! We'll spend the first week back looking at applications of integration. From there on, it's overall review in preparation for your exams. I will make every effort to leave time in class to work on problems. Still, to do well on your exams, it is crucial that you spend at least 30 minutes to an hour each day outside of class working on math. If there are specific areas where you feel weak, let me know and I'll get you some specific practice. See you in class,
Mr. Alei

HL 1 - 3/26/12

Welcome back folks. I hope you all had a wonderful spring break and are ready to head down the home stretch with renewed energy. I know I am! I'd like to work some more with some of the algebra and function ideas before we head into a more systematic look at trig ideas. I'm not sure how long that will take, so this week will be fairly fluid. Work on finishing all the problems in the Algebra review packet that I gave you. There are some specific ones that I know I want to go over, please identify others that illustrate confusing or important points. See you in class,
Mr. Alei

OK folks. Q3 is behind us, grades are soon to be posted on Edline. We'll head into Spring Break by continuing our look at Chapter 7 - Exponential functions (and later logs). We'll have a short graphing quiz on Friday, summarizing the couple ideas that start off the chapter. When you return, we'll buckle down for the home stretch! See you in class,

SL 1 - 3/5/12

With Q3 behind us, we're about ready to head down the home stretch. But before we go off to Spring Break and tank up for Q4, we'll finish our Exponents and Logarithm work with one more lesson and the test on Friday. Please note: If you will not be in class on Friday, please see me! Waiting until after Spring Break to take this test will put you at an extreme disadvantage! So come in early and often to clarify any issues. As it turns out we will have a short class on Wed so that will help to review some. See you in class,
Mr. Alei

SL 2 - 3/5/12

Basically we'll be practicing integration in class this week. There will be no class on Tuesday due to your field trip. Thursday and Friday will involve integrating ax + b and working with your calculator. But there are no real new ideas there. So mostly we will do problems in class. You should be working at your own pace to finish Chapter 21 before Spring Break (you can extend into the break if you want to, but I would strongly advise against it). When we return, we will begin on Chapter 22, applications of integration.

Also, don't forget, if you are doing the Circles IA, it is due, by email, no later than Monday, 3/13. Please attach a Word version and a PDF version of your work.

Enjoy your field trip - I will see you in class,
Mr. Alei

SL2: Week of 3/5/12

Tue 3/6/12: No Class - Senior Field Trip
Thu 3/8/12: Discuss finding c from boundary conditions
21D: #1begh,2beh,3,4,5bcef,6cfi,7bc,8-13: Integrating f(ax + b)
Fri 3/2/12:
21E.1: 1col2,2: Integrals w/calculator
21E.2: #2-10 even & 9: Integrals w/calculator

During Spring Break:
Try to complete the IB Calculus Practice Problems from the handout. The markscheme is here. The first 20 problems are primarily based on differentiation. Try to get to a full understanding of those, using the text and problems from Chapters 18, 19, and 20 as needed. Problems 21-50 are more integration based. You should be able to do the basic ones pretty well based on what we've done in Ch 21. But don't sweat the applications - volumes, etc. Look at them, perhaps, but plan to do them after we begin work on Ch 22 upon your return.

For additional info on these and other topics, refer to the excellent online lectures under the Calculus section at the Kahn Academy.
